2013 Mother of The Year Winner: Missed School Events Edition

I don’t get to do that much at N’s school. Even though I have an amazing boss who works really hard to let us participate in events during the day, there are a lot of things I just can’t get to. Luckily, Nicholas understands that and has never been upset when neither William nor I can do something. Today was not one of those days. I could have made it to the end-of-year awards ceremony. It wouldn’t have been any problem. The teacher sent home a note, and she emailed us on Friday that it was going to be today. But, I got the dates mixed up. In my mind, it was supposed to be on Wednesday. So, my sweet boy, who is having a hard time at school right now, got two certificates and a medal with not a single person from his family there cheering.

I saw the certificates when we went through his backpack this evening, but I thought they were just given to him in class. And I saw him with the medal tonight, but thought it was last year’s medal. And then it struck me that it was today. I checked my email and sure enough, we had missed his assembly. And because his Grandpa, W’s parents, and N’s Aunt and Uncle depend on us to tell them this stuff, they all missed it too. Mother fucker.

He was still awake when I realized what had happened, and I asked him if he was upset. He said no, that he was okay. He even told me that we could go to the next one. Because he’s a sweet, sweet boy. But I still feel like a complete asshole. And I’m so sad.

Tomorrow I’ll brag about my boy after we take some pictures of him with his medal and certificates.

  1. Oh lady, that is so hard. I agree with Rachel, we’ve all done it. Sometimes we SUCK at this parenting gig. I am so sorry. He knows you love him and that is the most important part. xoxo

  2. If it makes you feel any better I completely forgot about Maggie’s Thanksgiving Feast this year – her Kinder year πŸ™ When I picked her up from school that afternoon the teacher mentioned it & I felt like a complete failure of a parent.

So don’t beat yourself up too badly. My poor baby was the only one in her class who didn’t have their family to eat with & when I tearfully apologized, she looked at me with a big smile & a hug and said it was ok. :(. Makes me cry just thinking about it.

  3. These things happen. I remember once when my Mom didn’t look very carefully at the dates for a Spring Break camp session at the YMCA. We arrived a week late as we were attending Catholic school at the time, and the dates coincided with the public school break. I still remember showing up all packed at the crack of dawn, wondering where the heck the bus and all the other campers were. Of course, I was a bit happy too, because I didn’t want to go to camp, but that is another story. Take N out for ice cream or some treat he likes to celebrate. He is right – there will be other award ceremonies.

  4. I’m with the others, too. We all screw up sometimes. And I’ve noticed that the things that seem biggest to me are usually not the biggest to them. And vice versa. Last year I messed up times and came 2 hours late to my oldest’s school performance. He didn’t mind. But later that same week I forgot to send money for a new pencil and he lost his mind. Kids are weird. And resilient. But I know that doesn’t make us feel better when we messed up. Sorry, friend.
