Nicholas at 13
Nicholas became a teenager today. It’s such an odd title to give to a newborn, but everyone assures me that time has really moved this quickly.
There are so many details about Nicholas right now, at this particular moment. He watches a million YouTube videos about games, he video chats with his friends and they draw and talk about games, he pretends to collapse every time I ask him to do a chore (like, the toddler collapse where their bones turn to jelly? That one.), he’s smart but not stressed about grades, he likes movies, and wants Grandma’s casserole as often as possible. The doctor told me when he was 2 that Nicholas would only be 5’2″ or so, but he’s within an inch of my 5’6″ now. He still has two baby teeth but also has to shave. Time is weird.
But the core of what makes Nicholas? That hasn’t changed since the day he was born. He’s one of the most caring, sensitive people I know. He’s loyal and silly. He likes to laugh and is excited to share new stuff. He doesn’t want to disappoint you, and he’s the first with a hug when you need it, or he does.
This kid made me a mom and our first year was a tough one. I’ve said many times that I don’t think I would have made it through the end of 2005 and all of 2006 without him to care for and be on the receiving end of his love. He’s an amazing spirit and I’m so glad we get to be the ones who nurture it.
I mean, he’s also a jerk sometimes, because he’s a human. But, mostly? He’s pretty spectacular.
Happiest birthday my blue-eyed boy. We love you more than words can say.
Nicholas yesterday (or, maybe, 2005)
Nicholas today. Sigh.
Happy birthday to Nicholas, and best wishes for wonderful things to happen in this next stage of his life.
