One Good Thing: Thanksgiving Edition
Starting in April 2021, the day before my birthday, I decided to start doing one good thing for myself everyday. It could be big, it is almost always something small, and occasionally it could be for other people. But the point is to be intentional in taking care of myself…whatever that means from day to day. Baby steps, they’re what I’m taking. I started a Facebook group and encourage members to also do one good thing a day for themselves.
The last few days have been full of good things. My father-in-law is very sick (that’s not one of the good things, just giving some context), and we’re all trying to be with him as much as possible. The last several years my little family has stayed home over Thanksgiving since we always go down for Christmas. It’s a 7-hour drive, so it just makes more logistical sense. But we aren’t paying much attention to logistics right now. And neither is either of my husband’s siblings.
That means that my husband, his sister and his brother (with two wives and a Boyfriend, and our combined 7 kids) were all there. Way too many people in my in-law’s house, but there was not a word allowed to be spoken of the possibility of a hotel for anyone. So there were bodies on couches, in every bed, and on camping cots.
There was a lot of laughing, so many embarrassing stories, squabbling, and way too much food. The house was too hot and it rained out some of the plans to hunt. The dogs fought some and our tiny dog, Lemmon, was carried around like a baby almost the whole time. There were so many snuggles, and there was shopping and more food and really good margaritas. Mostly there was lots of time hanging out with each other and especially Papa. He may have told some stories we’d heard before, but we’re listening to whatever he says whenever he wants to say it. We were so busy being together, that I only took a few pictures. This is my favorite, as I was sitting on the front porch wrapped in a blanket watching a Norther’ blow in making the rain come down sideways. Also, I’ve never spelled “Norther'” and have no idea if that’s right?
And we’ll do it all again in a few weeks.
I would love to hear some good things you’ve done for yourself recently!
